Freedom (Rottweiler) and Liberty (Black Lab) are obviously not related but are brothers in survival.

Freedom and Liberty were initially spotted by as an Los Angeles Animal Cruelty Task Force Officer in Lincoln Heights at 5:30 AM on July 3rd. The dogs looked like they were just strolling along on the sidewalk, at a very slow pace, and because of their docile nature and calm disposition, the officer thought they must belong to a guardian/owner.
Later that morning, the phone rang in her office, and it was a Deputy City Attorney, who is part of Central Trials office, Animal Cruelty Section. She sounded distressed and explained that she just saved two dogs from running into the street in front of the criminal courts building, and asked for help. As the officer walked from Parker Center to the court house, she thought “How likely are these dogs THE dogs I saw in Lincoln Heights?” It couldn’t be, that would mean that they walked over 5 miles, and ended up on Broadway and Temple. How did they get across such busy streets and not get hit by a car? She herself barely got across the street, waiting for a light and using a cross walk.
As the officer approached a small crowd of people, she realized that they were indeed the same dogs. The Deputy City Attorney told her that both dogs started to wander into the courthouse and the Deputies pushed them out with a broom into the street! She was able to save them from being hit by a car and gather them across the street. This crowd of people had come together, managed to tie the dogs, and provided water. These people consisted solely of public servants from L.A. County and L.A. City, who were all trying to help. The officer called the city animal control, and stayed with the dogs until they picked up the pair.
Remarkably, Freedom, who is protective of his little brother, has a kind and gentle nature, typical of his breed, and Liberty, who is also friendly, appears to be a little more naively impetuous in his attempts to explore the outside world, have learned how to live and survive in the big city. They somehow safely made it from Lincoln Heights to downtown Los Angeles by continuing to walk with pedestrians on the sidewalk. They were observed using the crosswalk when the arrow changed just as other pedestrians began to cross, but not before. On top of this, the pair has unconscionably endured cruelty through neglect because they both had an extensive case of mange leading to the loss of approximately 80% of their fur on their back halves and calloused skin near their leg joints. Additionally, Liberty’s ribs were starting to show and while still active, he was emaciated.
Forte Animal Rescue intervened and has rescued these “brothers” from the pound. They are receiving the proper medical care that they need. Our veterinarian said with good care and nutrition, their coats will grow back. Because of their mangy appearance, the pound determined they were 8 years old, however, through the veterinary exams, we discovered that they are only about 2 years old! These are two gorgeous purebred dogs with no mean bone in their bodies!
After all they’ve been through, they are so bonded and would love to be adopted together. Thanks to the caring people who caught them at the courthouse, they were rescued from the street. They now deserve someone who is compassionate and responsible to commit to their wellbeing throughout their lifetime. They urgently need a foster, or better, a forever home. Please help us find the special someone who will open his/her home and heart to Freedom and Liberty!
